Khepri Bioconversion project mitigates against climate change by processing abattoir and food waste on site using flies and converts the flies into low cost feed proteins for the farmers which reduces the dependency on unsustainable products like fishmeal and soya meal.
Long Description
The abattoir and food manufacturing sector in South Africa produces over 10 million metric tons of waste annually. The waste is dumped in landfill sites where they produce noxious landfill greenhouse gasses and increase the risk of contaminating ground water.
On the other side South Africa is a net importer of feed proteins such as fishmeal ( contributing to global overfishing) and soya meal ( contributing to global soil degradations) and these products are expensive to emergent farmers causing many to go out of business for not being able to afford tho feed their animals.
We at Khepri have developed rearing platform that allows for the fast breakdown of this waste by 95% using insects such as flies and the insects are converted into animal feed protein that creates a circular food production economy in the region. We are in pilot phase in Krugersdorp South Africa and we are looking for expand our impact in the next ten years to process 1 million tons of waste a year using it to bring relief to 30000 farmers in the SADC region.
