Prepare your household for future water restrictions by valuing and connecting to your water source and lower your daily consumption
Long Description
WHY: By 2030 the water supply in the world will be dramatically diminished. Today, that is already the case in Cape Town, South-Africa, where there is a water restriction of 87 litres a day per person. The source of drinking water, the Theewaterskloof dam, is nearly empty because of drought. Europeans also need to be prepared to these future water shortages and consequent restrictions. Domestic water consumption in Europe is currently 137 litres per person – we therefore would to have to reduce our consumption by 50 litres a day.
THE SOLUTION: The Tap Into The Source Platform creates an emotional connection and gives value to the natural source of your water. It shows your consumption in relation to the amount of available water in the source. It brings together users that share the same water source and creates a sense of community and promotes communal initiatives.
The platform also makes your water usage visible using a smart water meter: it tracks daily water usage and encourages you to use less. The platform shows your consumption clear metrics and alerts you when you go over the recommended amount by the water companies. You can share tips and alternatives, compare to others in your community and challenge each other to behave responsibly towards your water source.
The project will start in Amsterdam and can be scaled to other areas in Europe. In partnership with the water companies, like Waternet, creating this platform will result in shared responsibility to protect the water source.
