Long Description

Climate change impacts threaten the very existence of mankind if global concentration of greenhouse gases continues to build up. Continued dependency on fossil fuels means that carbon emission trend will be difficult to reverse. Open fire and paraffin stoves are the main cooking solutions in informal and rural settlements. The flammable toxic fluids and open flames have led to rampant fires, putting people and the environment at risk. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 600,000 Africans die annually and millions more suffer from chronic illnesses caused by indoor air pollution from inefficient and dangerous traditional cooking fuels and stoves.

Thus, IRDA was established with a vision to democratize universal access to access to sustainable, cheap, healthy, safe, and fast cooking. It aims to achieve sustainable, human centered incremental clean energy. The innovative cook stove is designed to save lives. The stove is powered by bio-based fuel, a combination that helps to mitigate climate change as it does not cause smoke, odors and carbon monoxide poisoning.

To date, the firm has prototyped and sold 116 handmade Bio moto Cookers and established a potential client base of over 3,000. This will generate income, create employment, and improve safety in homes. The stove has recorded 68% thermal efficiency compared to 36% for charcoal stoves, translating to 30% cheaper cost of cooking compared to traditional alternatives. The cooking solution is targeting over 80% of the developing world population that is routinely exposed to smoke pollution from traditional cook stoves and open fires.
