Google Relief

Google Relief

Google Relief aims to help climate migrants, using AI to analyse the best location for rehousing and ensuring an efficient donation process.

Long Description

Climate change is not something that will affect us in the near future – it’s already having a major impact on today’s world. In the event of a natural disaster, the first priority is to find temporary rehousing for those displaced – providing basic needs such as shelter, sanitation and medical attention. We want to use Googles Cloud Vision API technology to help ease this process.

Cloud Vision is an AI tool that uses machine learning technology to understand the content of an image. Using this technology, Cloud Vision could locate the most suitable location for rehousing after disaster strikes. It would take into account water sources, road access and drainage logistics to host the maximum amount of people in need. By using IKEA’s refugee shelters with fixed dimensions, Cloud Vision can optimise the spread and amount of shelters in the geographical area nearby the disaster.

Once a refugee camp is established, donations can help those displaced with crucial goods. However, a common problem in disaster zones is the over donation of unnecessary items, which hinders relief efforts. Using the same technology, Cloud Vision API can be used to scan objects at donation sites and at home, ensuring that the right donations are being sent.

We believe that Google Relief can be part of the solution to adapt to the impact of climate change, using existing technology.

Note: We chose to link this project to Google’s AI, but utilising a different AI with computer vision would also be possible.
